The 2006-2007 school year is behind us now as the last of the exams is being bundled up and sent off to Alberta Education for grading. Rooms, lockers and hallways along with the rest of the school are being cleaned according to the regular summer routine. Textbooks are being catalogued, schedules are being produced, and courses are being timetabled.
At this time of the year I would like to thank the people who work so hard to make John Paul II such an excellent school:
· Mr. Albert Mastaler and his care taking crew of Mrs. Jackie Crocker have managed to keep our school in outstanding condition throughout the year.
· Our front office team of Yvonne Raiwet and Shirley Yuzda have made things work again for JPII. Yvonne has worked hard to complete all of our Alberta Education submissions, create report cards, enter timetable data. Shirley continues to do fine work keeping our books straight, filing year end reports, and insuring that all of the financial details are taken care of before the school closes for the summer.
· Our dedicated Educational Assistants at JPII go above and beyond the call of duty in so many ways. Your efforts in assisting our students to succeed means more than you know.
· Our Parent School Council, a small but dedicated group of parents, continues to be very supportive of John Paul II High School. If you would like to have a say in what happens at JPII next year, consider joining us for a meeting a month. Your input would be truly valued.
· Judy Sutton, our librarian has done a masterful job once again. Judy has kept our second computer lab up and running as smoothly as possible and has been, as usual, a great resource for students using our library.
· Our teachers have once again proven to be the best! Their commitment to academics, athletics, leadership, spiritual growth and the overall well being and development of our students is commendable. I know that our teachers have made a very positive difference in the lives of their students this year.
As is the case every year, we are sad to say goodbye to several excellent teachers. Mr. Letwin, and Ms. Kiely are off to new locations and new challenges in their lives. Mr. Letwin will be assuming duties as one of the Assistant Principals of Archbishop Jordan Catholic School in Sherwood Park and Ms. Kiely will be relocating to Ontario. Both of these fine people have worked hard to make JPII an outstanding school. We wish them well.
New to our staff for the 2007-2008 school year is Mr. Jim Taylor. Mr. Taylor will be teaching Chemistry, Physics, and Science. We welcome him to the JPII family. Making a return to JPII is Mr. Phil Quinn and Mrs. Rhonda Bothwell. Phil will be returning as the Assistant Principal of JPII. Rhonda will be returning for the second semester to continue her Chemistry assignment. Welcome back Rhonda and Phil! I know you will find JPII to be an outstanding place to work, celebrate, learn and grow.
The school office will be open 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. for the 2007-2008 school year business beginning August 23. Students should be at the school on the following dates to pick up their timetables:
Grade 9 and 12 – August 27
Grade 11 - August 28
Grade 10 - August 29
Grade 9/10 students can see our Assistant Principal to complete their registrations and grade 11/12 students should see our Counsellor to complete their registrations.
Please note, the first day of classes for students is
Tuesday, September 4th.
Grade 12 Diploma Exam Results will be mailed to students no later than July 19th. Appeal of Diploma Exam Marks must be received no later than August 1. Please contact Alberta Education at 427-0010 for information.
Please be advised that a $100.00 textbook caution fee will be added to each student’s fees for the 2007-2008 school year. When all textbooks have been returned to the school at the end of June, the $100.00 fee will be refunded. Our hope is that losses will be substantially reduced for the 2007-2008 school year.
Please join us on Tuesday September 11, 2007 for an opportunity to meet our staff. Our evening begins at 7:00 p.m.
To those of you who are leaving JPII, especially our grads, I wish you the light of Christ as you set out on your journey. Please keep a special place in your heart for JPII and all the wonderful work that is done here. For those of you returning, I wish you a warm and relaxing summer filled with the peace of Christ.
